Behind the Scenes of Breaking Strings: Crafting a Punk Rock Aesthetic in Film Design

Creating a film is a collaborative effort that merges various talents and disciplines, each adding to the final product. One of the most visually striking roles in this process is that of the production designer. In the short film Breaking Strings, directed by Hugo Fulton, the story focuses on a punk rock band chasing fame in the lively 1980s. As the production designer, I had the exciting chance to shape the visual narrative, from set design to costume creation, in collaboration with high fashion models from London and the US.

The Vision for Breaking Strings

When I first read the script for Breaking Strings, the raw energy and rebellious spirit of the punk rock scene in the 1980s immediately captivated me. The film captures a time when music served as a powerful protest and a means of self-expression. My mission as a production designer was to build an authentic environment that reflected this ethos while appealing to the high fashion sensibilities of our cast.

The punk rock aesthetic is marked by bold colors, eclectic styles, and an unmistakable DIY attitude. For instance, I wanted the set and costumes to resonate with this spirit through eye-catching elements that included:

• Graffiti-covered walls: These were adorned with slogans and images that echoed the punk movement.

The end goal was to ensure the concert venue and personal outfits truly conveyed the vibrant atmosphere of the 1980s punk rock scene.

Designing the Concert Venue

I began my process by researching iconic punk fashion from the 1980s. Inspired by figures like Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, I aimed to combine classic punk elements—like leather jackets and ripped jeans—with modern fashion silhouettes. For example:

• The lead singer sported a bold, asymmetrical haircut, paired with a studded leather jacket and tailored trousers that screamed confidence.

Collaborating with High Fashion Models

Working with high fashion models created a mix of both challenges and thrilling opportunities. These professionals brought invaluable experience to their roles, but I needed to ensure that the costumes appealed to both the punk aesthetic and high fashion.

During fittings, I encouraged models to express their individuality while wearing the costumes. For instance, one model added personal jewelry from their collection that perfectly enhanced their character’s look.
