Creating a film is a collaborative effort that merges various talents and disciplines, each adding to the final product. One of the most visually striking roles in this process is that of the production designer. In the short film Breaking Strings, directed by Hugo Fulton, the story focuses on a punk rock band chasing fame in the lively 1980s. As the production designer, I had the exciting chance to shape the visual narrative, from set design to costume creation, in collaboration with high fashion models from London and the US.

In this post, I will take you behind the scenes of Breaking Strings, sharing insights into the creative process, the challenges we faced, and the satisfaction of bringing a punk rock aesthetic to life.

The Vision for Breaking Strings

When I first read the script for Breaking Strings, the raw energy and rebellious spirit of the punk rock scene in the 1980s immediately captivated me. The film captures a time when music served as a powerful protest and a means of self-expression. My mission as a production designer was to build an authentic environment that reflected this ethos while appealing to the high fashion sensibilities of our cast.

The punk rock aesthetic is marked by bold colors, eclectic styles, and an unmistakable DIY attitude. For instance, I wanted the set and costumes to resonate with this spirit through eye-catching elements that included:

  • Graffiti-covered walls: These were adorned with slogans and images that echoed the punk movement.

  • Mismatched furniture: We sourced vintage pieces from local thrift shops to provide an authentic feel.

The end goal was to ensure the concert venue and personal outfits truly conveyed the vibrant atmosphere of the 1980s punk rock scene.

Designing the Concert Venue

Designing the concert venue was one of the most thrilling aspects of my role. This space needed to pulse with energy and excitement, immersing the audience in the band’s world. My vision included a gritty, urban environment that transported viewers back to the heart of 1980s punk.

To achieve this, we incorporated several dramatic elements:

  1. Vibrant color palette: We used a mix of neon colors and bold patterns, which were hallmark traits of the era and pulled the audience visually into the punk scene.

  2. Stage design: I created a slightly elevated stage to foster a sense of intimacy and connection between the band members and their fans. This setup encouraged dynamic interactions during performances.

The combination of these design choices helped to enhance the film’s vibrant visual storytelling.

Costume Design: Merging Punk and High Fashion

Costume design was crucial in establishing the characters' identities and their personal journeys throughout the film. With high fashion models cast in prominent roles, there was pressure to create costumes that reflected punk aesthetics while aligning with contemporary fashion trends.

I began my process by researching iconic punk fashion from the 1980s. Inspired by figures like Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren, I aimed to combine classic punk elements—like leather jackets and ripped jeans—with modern fashion silhouettes. For example:

  • The lead singer sported a bold, asymmetrical haircut, paired with a studded leather jacket and tailored trousers that screamed confidence.

  • The bassist embraced an androgynous style featuring oversized shirts and statement accessories, highlighting their unique personality.

These costume choices not only made the characters visually appealing but also deepened viewers' connections to them.

Collaborating with High Fashion Models

Working with high fashion models created a mix of both challenges and thrilling opportunities. These professionals brought invaluable experience to their roles, but I needed to ensure that the costumes appealed to both the punk aesthetic and high fashion.

During fittings, I encouraged models to express their individuality while wearing the costumes. For instance, one model added personal jewelry from their collection that perfectly enhanced their character’s look. This collaboration resulted in a dynamic fusion of punk rock and high fashion, which elevated our film's visual storytelling.

Overcoming Challenges

Every production presents its unique challenges, and Breaking Strings was no different. One significant hurdle was the tight timeline for set and costume design. With a modest budget and looming shoot dates, I had to be resourceful and efficient.

I leveraged local thrift stores, vintage shops, and artisans to source materials and props. This approach not only cut costs but also infused authenticity into our design. For instance, we repurposed found objects into unique set pieces, reinforcing the DIY spirit central to punk culture.

The Final Product

As production wrapped, I felt immense pride in what we had achieved. The concert venue buzzed with the energy of the actors, complemented by the meticulously crafted set design. The costumes were a stunning blend of punk and high fashion, not only looking fantastic on screen but also telling a powerful story of rebellion and ambition.

Watching the final cut of Breaking Strings was surreal. The vibrant visuals, combined with the compelling performances, created an engaging narrative that resonated with audiences. It was gratifying to see how our production design significantly contributed to the film’s overall impact.

Reflections on the Experience

Working as a production designer on Breaking Strings was an incredible journey, enabling me to explore the fascinating intersection of punk rock culture and high fashion. From designing the concert venue to crafting costumes that mirrored the spirit of the 1980s, each aspect of the production was a labor of love.

This experience highlighted the importance of collaboration, creativity, and resourcefulness in film design. Looking back, I am reminded of the power of visual storytelling and the pivotal role production design plays in breathing life into narratives. I hope that Breaking Strings encourages others to embrace their individuality and pursue their passions, much like the punk rock band within the film did.

Every new project brings the promise of creating engaging worlds that captivate viewers and leave lasting impressions. The journey of a production designer is never monotonous, and I eagerly anticipate where my next adventure will lead me.
