Transforming Classic Literature into Modern Film: A Deep Dive into the Production Design of EMMA

Creating a modern film adaptation of classic literature is both an exciting opportunity and a complex task. It allows filmmakers to revive iconic stories while reaching today's audiences. "EMMA: A Modern Adaptation," written by Sienna Mansfield Davies and directed by Dan Merry, is a shining example of this transformation. As the production designer for this film, I had the

chance to reimagine Jane Austen's beloved character, Emma Woodhouse, through a contemporary lens.

For example, we included bright reds and lively yellows to enhance the scene's energy.

Colour and Lighting

Colour played a major role in the party scene. Our vibrant palette, featuring shades like emerald green and sapphire blue, highlighted the characters' personalities. Emma's outfit, for instance, was a deep blue, symbolising her confidence and complexity, while her friend Harriet wore a playful yellow to reflect her cheerful spirit.
